Aerospace Test Stands
Today, many flights are routed through hubs in an attempt to optimize maintenance planning and capacity loading. This results in lots of connections and unnecessarily long trip times. Airlines are now migrating to smaller regional jets in an effort to become more competitive and offer the customer shorter travel times. Using smaller jets rather than flying half empty, larger aircraft also saves fuel and personnel. The use of these smaller aircraft will increase the need for medium size test stands across the United States, in the 150 HP area, up to 17,000 rpm without speed increasing gearboxes.
UNICO has identified this need and is working with motor manufacturers to offer fluid-cooled motors to meet these test stand requirements. UNICO is simultaneously developing both water and air-cooled vector drives optimized for this application.
The need for more regional aerospace test and repair facilities that utilize this size of stand will continue to grow in their use worldwide. The aerospace test stand drive system will offer of a high performance vector drive using dynomometer software and a water or oil-cooled, low inertia induction motor.
The motor will be A/C Induction with a base speed of 6000 rpm and operating to a maximum speed of 17,000 rpm. These regional jet test systems will check-out numerous types of rotating equipment. The function will allow local testing which reduces cost and increases safety.

On applications that will require the drive to absorb power, UNICO will offer fully regenerative inverters with optional water-cooling, when water is available. Water-cooled inverters will allow for a greatly reduced footprint.
Today the market is fairly non-performance oriented. However, as drives and dynomometer software are used, increased awareness of test capabilities will drive increased use. The UNICO 2400 is well suited for a market with growing performance demands.
